Women Empowerment – Gender Responsive and Transformative Action

Women Empowerment – Gender Responsive and Transformative Action

Women Empowerment broadly means – women have the right to take decisions equal to men in legal, political, physical, mental, social and economic fields in the cultural background of their family, community, society and nation. Empowerment for women means to have such power, which can accept her importance and bring her to the status of equal civil and equal rights. We must bring the humanitarian and development spheres closer together from the very beginning to address affected women, address structural and economic impacts and help prevent a new spiral of fragility and instability.

When women become aware against the socio-psychological-cultural injustice, gender discrimination, inequality, negative impact of socio-cultural, economic and political forces towards themselves, then it can be understood that they are being empowered. We see women empowerment as a process in which women have access to physical, human and intellectual resources such as knowledge, information, ideas and financial resources such as money or wealth and decisions regarding home, family, community, society and nation etc.

A woman is possessed of senses, imagination and thoughts should be able to express them freely. Personal empowerment means increasing the power to negotiate and make decisions and provide confidence. An important aspect of women’s social empowerment is the promotion of gender equality. Gender equality refers to a society in which women and men enjoy equal opportunities, outcomes, rights and responsibilities in all walks of life.

To empower women socially, economically, educationally, politically and legally, It is not easy for women to change the culture of neglect that has gone so deep in Indian society. But that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. Only revolutions bring change, but reforms take some time. The idea of women empowerment may sound daunting, but all we have to do is make a focused effort in the right direction, which will help liberate women from all kinds of evil.

The cross-sectoral commitments on gender equality and the empowerment of girls and women in humanitarian action are the responsibilities of all citizens in the society. The inaugural gender equality commitments and benchmarks reflect the fact that gender equality is an organizational principle for collective responsibility to deliver quality programming and achieve strategic results in emergency response.

It is quintessential to look at ways of ending Gender Based Violence against women and girls in emergencies through risk mitigation and prevention, and access to services for survivors.

The meaningful participation of women and girls and organizations representing their voices is essential for humanitarian response to be relevant, dignifying, and empowering.

A solid understanding of the gender norms, roles and power dynamics prior and during the emergency is essential for programmes to respond to the needs and concerns of women and men, girls and boys, and inequalities to be addressed.

Promoting positive gender norms and socialization among girls and adolescents, for example, through gender-responsive parenting, is one of the most effective ways to achieve gender transformation in childhood. Gender socialization is key to gender transformation and empowerment. As a result of increase in education, rural development programmes, transport facilities, there has been a change in outlook . Male members of the family will also have to contribute significantly for these empowerment. Awareness, education, removal of Social Barriers is the need to come forward for development. The destination is far away, but if everyone tries together, it is not impossible to achieve it.
